SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIA FOR DANCE

The Pan-Hellenic Association “Greek Dance Archives” is a pioneer in organizing symposia throughout Greece for the research of Greek dance and the way in which it was influenced during the transition from a rural to an urban environment.

The important opportunities offered by these Symposia for the provision of information and for the communication between regional sectors and scientists from fields connected to dance research, (Anthropology, Ethnomusicology, Museums, History etc), cannot be overlooked.

Our aim is to ensure future co-operations that will contribute long-term to the recording, promotion and distinction of regional cultural traditions and also to work with corresponding sectors in Europe in order to exchange experiences and promote new co-operations of a comparative nature.

The “Greek Dance Archives” has organized:

1.       The 1st International Symposium for dance research, in Serres, 5-6 April, 2003, with the Municipality of Strymona.

2.      The 2nd Symposium with the Center for Culture of the Municipality of Ioannina, 15-17 May, 2003, which was attended by the acting Minister of Education.

3.      The 3rd Symposium in Tyrnavo with the municipality’s Cultural Organization on 12-14 December, 2003.

4.      The 4th Symposium in Vovousa, Ioannina on 16-18 July, 2004.

5.      The 5th International Symposium in Hania on 6, 7 and 8 May, 2005 with the Municipality of Hania and sponsored by the Ministries of Culture and Education.

The 6th International Symposium for dance was held with great success in Ancient Corinth, sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the International Organization of Folk Art, IOV. It was organized by “Greek Dance Archives”, the Municipality of Corinth and the cultural society “Apollo”.

The organization of a series of symposia, one-day meetings, seminars and cultural events, each time in a different city and always with the co-operation of local administrations and local cultural sectors, re-examines Greek dance in the light of new scientific conceptions and trends.  Through these activities folk culture, in all its diversity, encountered in rural Greece,  is researched and promoted and valuable informative material is collected.
