The Ilioupoli Open University event titled "Easter Customary Practices: History, Symbolisms, Significance" was held with great success on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at the Museum of National Resistance.
Keynotes & Theoretical Approach:
  • Christos Tentzerakis (President of the Greek Dance Archive): Highlighted the historical evolution of Easter customs and how folk traditions merged with Christian worship to give deep meaning to the message of Resurrection.
  • Mika Pappa-Sevou (General Secretary of the Greek Dance Archive): Analyzed the ritual nature of the traditional dance "Kato sta Ierosolyma - Matakia".
Live Presentation & Tradition:
Residents of Sklivani brought the event to life by performing traditional Lazarus carols and Easter dances from their village. The presentation was supported by the Sklivani Brotherhood of Athens and the Sklivani Brotherhood of Ioannina. To close the evening, the Mayor of Ilioupoli, Mr. Stathis Psyrropoulos, and the President of the Municipal Council, Ms. Dimitra Korma, awarded honorary diplomas to the participants.
Town Hall Visit & Future Collaborations:
The following day, the Sklivani delegation received a highly honorable welcome at the Town Hall by Mr. Stathis Psyrropoulos and Ms. Dimitra Korma. The Mayor expressed his admiration for Sklivani’s cultural heritage, pledged to visit the village soon, and proposed that their dance group participate in the upcoming events celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Municipality of Ilioupoli.
